Oscar surprises and snubs
18.05.12
SURPRISES
- Although The Artist got most of the pre-nomination publicity, Hugo led the field with 11 Oscar nominations.
- The Tree of Life , Terrence Malick's poetic but elusive film about growing up in Texas, got a best-picture nomination, and Malick was nominated as best director.
- Bridesmaids , a well-received (if vulgar) comedy, didn't get one, but Melissa McCarthy was nominated for best supporting actress for her hilarious (if vulgar) turn as a bridesmaid with diarrhea.
- Mexican actor Demian Bichir was nominated as best actor for A Better Life, a well-received film that nonetheless made less than $2 million.
- Rooney Mara won a best-actress nomination, even though her film, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, didn't get a best-picture nod.
SNUBS
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hal-lows: Part 2 didn't get any acting nominations.
- Albert Brooks was left out of the supporting-actor field, despite his head-snapping turn as a genially violent gangster in Drive.
