Calls for regulation of laser operators
Chinese-made laser machines capable of removing tattoos and birthmarks are being sold on ebay for less than $1000.
Dr Phillip Bekhor, Director of the Laser Unit at the Royal Children's Hospital, told Red Symons that the laser industry isn't regulated.
"They're available and there's no regulation so anyone could buy one and purport to be moving tattoos," says Dr Bekhor.
Dr Bekhor says so-called 'q-switch' lasers generate a short pulse - in the nanosecond range - exploding the particles of tattoo ink into dust that the body's immune system can then remove.
While this is safer than older treatments, there are still dangers.
"I think with any of the tattoo removal lasers... if the power's too high you'll leave scars and so you'll end up with a scar in the shape of a tattoo which you're stuck with," says Dr Bekhor.
Dr Bekhor says there is an 'epidemic of burns' inflicted by non-medical operators of lasers.
He says the problem has been compounded by tort reform designed to stop frivolous action against doctors.
