Q&A: Artist's time in Middle East influenced her Noble and Greenough photo ...

Brookline’s Rania Matar has a photography exhibit at the Foster Gallery at the Noble and Greenough School called “A Girl and Her Room,” running through Feb. 17.
Two of Matar’s daughters attend the school, and Matar cherishes the opening of the exhibit as perhaps the only time her teenagers were not embarrassed about her in front of their friends. The Dedham Transcript spoke with her recently about her art and her project.
How did you get interested in photography?
I was trained as an architect but had done lots of art in college, not just photography. In 2000, when I was pregnant with my fourth child, I decided to take photo workshops so I could take better photos of my kids. Also, I wanted a small break from architecture and focus on art again. What was supposed to be temporary ended up being a career and life-changing decision for me. In 2002 I went to a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon and fell in love with the storytelling aspect of photography and the ability it provided me to find the beauty in everyday simple moments. I never went back to practicing architecture.
