Dramatic Academy Awards ceremony included surprises, controversies
22.05.12
At one point, the biggest surprise at Sunday’s 84th annual Academy Awards appeared to be the Best Editing prize going to “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”
Those trying to determine the Best Picture winner early were more surprised than even the editors of that film.
Oscar history often has found Best Editing a strong precursor of the film that wins Best Picture. Most guessed “The Artist” or “Hugo” would take the prize. After all, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” was not a Best Picture nominee. So the editing award certainly jacked up the evening’s drama.
Some ‘uh-oh’ moments
Mind you, bits of controversy also emerged:
■ During red carpet interviews, actor Sasha Baron Cohen promoted his new comedy by spilling a substance masquerading as ashes from a funeral urn on greeter Ryan Seacrest’s tuxedo.
■ Sides remain divided regarding whether Jennifer Lopez had a wardrobe malfunction on stage.
■ Billy Crystal dared to use blackface humor, with his impression of Sammy Davis Jr.
