The movie awards season for 2011-2012 finally comes to its conclusion at the 84th annual Academy Awards in Hollywood, Calif., this weekend. Here's my analysis of the top contenders in each category, and who is likely to thank the Academy come Sunday night.
Best Supporting Actress
Nominees: Berenice Bejo ("The Artist"); Jessica Chastain ("The Help"); Melissa McCarthy ("Bridesmaids"); Janet McTeer ("Albert Nobbs"); Octavia Spencer ("The Help").
Main contenders: The well-deserved nomination for Melissa McCarthy for "Bridesmaids" shows that the Academy has tolerance for vomit and explosive diarrhea jokes, but unfortunately, that's as far as they will be willing to go with the talented actress this time. Bejo is really the only actress poised to pull the biggest upset of the night with her star-making role in "The Artist," but she'll come up short against the clear frontrunner in the category from "The Help" (which is not Chastain, despite a performance full of heart). No, it will be Chastain's force of nature co-star.
