The River continues with “The Experiment” having Tess, Lincoln and the rest closing in on locating Emmet Cole. The show ramps up the action and the gore leaving the eerie horror behind for more visceral, well-worn zombies. The results are mixed as the horror is ineffectual – even if it is delightfully gross – but the emotions are surprisingly on key. The show takes a risky turn with its focus, shining its camera lights upon the mysterious Kurt, the crew’s muscle and protector. The reasons behind his involvement in the rescue mission have been a recurring subplot in the past episodes and this week spins his back story. The flashbacks work to humanize the character quite a bit. Television’s worst zombies and some laughable acting from Paranormal Activity actress Katie Featherston (even so her presence somehow fits) aside, the show builds toward a creepy reveal of the fate of Emmet Cole.
