Chinese New Year in Seattle

Hundreds of people crowded Hing Hay Park in Seattle’s International District to participate in the Lunar New Year Festival on Jan. 28.
Traditionally, Lunar New Year Festival, also known as Spring Festival in China, is to celebrate and welcome the spring season. The greatest celebration usually happens at the first day of the spring season, marking the end of the winter season.
This year, the festival in Seattle is to celebrate the Year of the Dragon in the lunar calendar, which begins on Jan. 23.
The half-day festival offered many cultural activities including a food walk, cultural pavilion and cultural performances.
Twenty restaurants from Chinatown, Seattle offered $2 including China, Japan, Cambodia and Vietnam. The cultural pavilion housed many stands offering calligraphy, origami, temporary tattoos and face painting.
Participants enjoyed the lion and dragon dance, a martial arts demonstration and taiko or Japanese drumming.
