Had been given to me as a Christmas present by my youngest son, Will, and so the hours passed in intimate companionship. A book. But then, a blue night. The garden captured at twilight — the scent of lilac and lily of the valley, triggering that crazy game the mind can play when you’re urgently transported to a sunny, fragrant May day 23 years ago, off to Women’s College Hospital to have a baby of all things, toting a beribboned white crocheted baby bonnet, the careful work of an excited mother-in-law. Safe, sexless white.
