I applaud Mr. Zurik's efforts to expose fraud, waste and corruption. However, I find it impossible to draw any conclusions from an article such as this. We are informed that 7000 cards per month are issued. Since the program is temporary, does that mean that 7000 cards expire every month? It would seem that since the benefits expire after 24 months, that the number of active cards would be 1,680,000 in any given 24 month period. I have no idea whether or not this is accurate. From the information given, it is not possible to determine how many active accounts exist. Mr. Zurik fails to mention how many transactions he examined over the 6 month period. It is stated that: "We found many examples of welfare waste." Just how many is "many." This is critical information that is missing.
Let's pull some figures out of the air, since we have no choice. If 1000 transactions per month were examined (6000), and the number of "many" abusive transactions is 100, then the number of abusive transactions
