Essex County eyes Irvington site for medical waste facility

ESSEX COUNTY — For a medical laboratory, surgical center or even a tattoo parlor, there is just one facility in Essex County that can safely dispose of potentially dangerous byproducts, such as needles and scalpels.
But a now-empty building in Irvington could soon house the county’s second publicly used medical waste disposal facility if Medco Environmental gets approval from the county and state.
Having heard a presentation last week on the proposed facility, the county freeholders are to introduce an ordinance Wednesday to amend the county’s solid waste management plan to include Medco’s services.
Final approval to set up the facility on Grove Street would come from the state Department of Environmental Protection, said Nicholas Maddaloni, solid waste and recycling programs coordinator for the Essex County Utilities Authority. The authority oversees solid waste collection and removal and recycling in Essex. The state review process could take four to six months after final action by the county.
